Samsung Galaxy S24: Pro Tips and Tricks

Optimising Battery Life
There’s nothing worse than being out and about when your phone runs out of juice. It doesn’t matter how many giga-somethings of RAM you’ve got if the thing won’t stay on!
Keep your S24 running for longer with these battery-saving tips:
1. Protect Battery mode
You may not know this but if a phone is repeatedly left plugged in when it’s already reached 100% charge, it can reduce its efficiency and lifespan in the long run. Not ideal.
Luckily, Samsung has a setting you can use to prevent that, which limits the level of charge to a maximum of 85%. Simply:
- Go to Settings, then Battery and device care.
- Select Battery.
- Go down and select More battery settings.
- Toggle on the Protect battery setting.
2. Dark Mode:
The brighter things are on your screen, the more juice your phone uses to light up the pixels (particularly on the incredible hi-res, energy-guzzling AMOLED displays the Galaxy S24 range has). Dark mode will invert background colours, making more app backgrounds and features black. To turn this on:
- Go to Settings, then Display.
- Activate Dark mode.
3. Disable Background Apps:
If you don’t close certain apps after you use them, they can hang around gobbling up precious battery power as they whir away in the background. Not ideal!
To limit the unwanted activity of apps when you’re not using them:
- Go to Settings, then Apps, then App Info.
- Select an app and toggle to disable background activity (but do take care, there are some apps you may want to keep running in the background, like fitness/step trackers and the like).
4. Reduce notification vibration intensity:
Phones use up a lot of charge every time they buzz. To reduce the impact incoming calls and notifications have on your battery life, simply:
- Go to Settings, then Sounds and vibration.
- Scroll down to Vibration intensity and press on it.
- Adjust the slider to your preference.
General Tips
5. Turn voice recordings into text
This is a very cool feature. If you’ve recorded a voice note of yourself, or someone else (at a meeting or in a class for example), your Galaxy S24 can turn voice notes into text instantly with their Transcribe Assist tool. To use it:
- Go into the Voice Recorder App.
- Tap on the recording you’d like turned into text.
- Press on the Transcribe button.
6. Change what your side key does
You can change the function of your side button so instead of opening Bixby (not everyone’s cup of tea!) to something different, like opening the power/turn off menu or the camera. To do this:
- Go into Settings.
- Open Advanced features.
- Select Side key.
- Choose what you want your side key to do from the menu.
7. Customise Your Home Screen
If you want to personalise the look and features you see on your home screen, you can do the following:
- Long-press on an empty space on your home screen (ie. in a gap between apps).
- Select what you want to change; add widgets, change wallpapers, and apply themes.
8. Secure Your Device
It’s always good to ensure that you set up the security features properly when you get a new phone. Two of the best things you can do initially are:
Turn on Biometrics:
Facial recognition or fingerprint scanning technology are both stronger forms of security than simple passcodes. To turn either of these on:
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Biometrics and Security.
- Follow the prompts.
Turn on Find My Mobile:
Using this feature, you can find your phone quickly if you misplace it. To set it up, go to:
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Biometrics and Security.
- Select Find My Mobile.
Camera Magic
9. Pro Mode:
Pro mode allows you to tweak some advanced settings on your camera, which can help you capture some unique, striking images. To use the tools:
- Open the Camera app.
- Swipe left to access Pro Mode.
- Adjust ISO, shutter speed, and focus manually.
10. Single Take:
Let AI do the heavy lifting with Single Take mode. One button press will capture a bunch of different styles of videos and images in one shot. It’s really easy to use too; all you need to do is:
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap Single Take in the camera modes.
11. Night Mode:
If you’re gonna be taking pictures in a dimly lit area, Night Mode will increase the amount of light your camera can absorb/detect, which makes the image look illuminated without affecting the quality. Simply:
- Open the Camera app.
- Swipe across until you reach ‘More’.
- Press Night.
- Then take a picture.
