At this time of year, everyone gets bombarded with ads offering big discounts, but how will you know if you’re getting the best deals for new gadgets? Read on to find out how to up your bargain hunting game this Black Friday weekend*

Price comparison sites

If you’ve already got a specific gadget in mind, there are a few places you should always check before making a purchase. PriceSpy and PriceRunner are comparison tools that show up-to-date prices for specific products across a wide range of websites. All you need to do is type in the name of the gadget and the model-name and hit search. Super-simple.

It’s worth being aware that they don’t include every single online retailer though, so it’s good to cross-check both tools (and it wouldn’t hurt to run an extra search on Google Shopping too, as that’ll often show prices from a broader selection of sites).

Deal hubs

If you’re just browsing and you haven’t got a specific product in mind, deal hubs are a good place to start.

Your first port of call should be the Hotukdeals website or app (Android / iOS). This tool is driven by a community of eagle-eyed members who are constantly scouring the internet to find the best bargains.

You’ll know if something’s a good deal by the level of ‘heat’ (aka. upvotes) it generates, and each listing has a full comment-thread where people ask questions and give reasons for why they’ve rated it hot or cold. Tidy! (Also, make sure to keep an eye on their Twitter account so you stay up to date with the best stuff they find).

There are also several editorial content hubs that provide comprehensive lists of the best deals, such as Expert Reviews, Techradar, and Which (the latter is particularly reliable because they’re completely independent and do all of their own testing).

If you’re more interested in which are the best gadgets pound-for-pound, Techradar is constantly updating their gadget-buying guides, and Tech Advisor regularly refreshes their buying advice section. They’re always worth checking out if you’re in the market for premium devices.

Can’t find a perfect deal?

Often, retailers hold back deals until Cyber Monday or even the January sales, so if you can’t find a price you’re 100% happy with over Black Friday weekend, you might be better off waiting.

That being said, it can be a bit risky to delay because some products (and particularly the most sought-after premium gadgets) don’t often reduce in price significantly. Do a bit of research around the brand you’re interested in to see whether they’ve previously offered discounts at different times throughout the year before you take the plunge.
