Google Android phones are highly anticipated to become the top-selling smartphones across Europe next year, according to leading mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse. If this prediction does come to fruition, the Android-based phones would oust Nokia from the top spot after many years.
Graham Stapleton, the head commercial officer for Carphone Warehouse, made the statement this week as it was revealed that the retailers had secured a deal to stock the new Google Nexus S phone, exclusively in their Europe-wide stores.
Elsewhere in the world of retail, and despite a £250m (US$400) marketing campaign, the new Windows Phone 7 phones from Microsoft have experienced rather disappointing sales figures. The news comes as reported by both network operators and retailers. Since their market debut in October of this year, the phone's dual branding with the Orange network has resulted in customer some confusion.
Nokia has dominated the mobile phone platform across the continent for the bulk of the last ten years, but Stapleton predicts that phones using the Android operating system will overtake phones from the Finnish company in the next quarter. Nokia has lost ground with the swift rise of the smartphone, which began with the introduction of the iPhone by Apple in 2007 and subsequently the following year, the initial Android phone.

Stapleton comments on some of the benefits of a phone with the Android operating system, "Customers tell us that being able to have a choice, being able to personalise their choice of phone is a key difference about Android compared to some of the other platforms out there. When we look at Android, it's available across a large range of handsets and at different prices."
