The best free games for Xbox One
21 July 2020
Looking for something new to play? Check out our list of the top free games available on Xbox One this July.
Destiny 2
Sure, it’s been out for a while, but it’s still one of the most gripping first-person shooters available. It’s receiving regular updates that alter the meta too, so there’s always new things to experience in Bungie’s incredibly detailed game-world. Since the base game went free-to-play last year, it’s been flooded with new players all looking to demonstrate their skills, so now is as good a time as any to get stuck in!
World of Tanks
It does what it says on the tin. This tactical wargame can take a while to get into, but once you’ve got to grips with the subtleties of the game mechanics, it’s a pleasure to play. While it might not appeal to all hair-trigger First-Person-Shooter fans, it rewards long-term strategists – so if you’re looking for something a bit different to the usual run-and-gun fare, check it out.

Modern Warfare: Warzone
Since it became one of the most downloaded free-to-play game of all time in just a few short months, Warzone has continued to cement its status at the top of the Battle Royale tree. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s worth a look – particularly if you enjoyed previous Call of Duty games. A bit of a warning; there’s a steep learning curve, so you might struggle to reach the latter stages of games while you’re getting the hang of it. It’s worth persisting though. Also, just a quick hint; you can check out tutorials by pro streamers like IcemanIsaac and [KSA]azzyadam to find out how to improve your skills.
Apex Legends
One of the current forerunners of the Battle Royale genre – Apex Legends continues to grow in scope and the fanbase can’t get enough. There is an endless range of possibilities in-game, thanks to the diverse characters and the variety of tactics that can lead to success. It’s fast-paced and fun, and arguably a touch more forgiving than some of the alternatives. The recent announcement of a new update which will add respawn beacons to the game should keep things fresh too. All good news!
Fortnite
We’d be remiss not to mention the grand-daddy of all free-to-play online shooters. Sure, it’s primarily aimed at youngsters, but Fortnite continues to gain fans of all ages thanks to its ever-evolving gameplay. With a gigantic online community, you can easily find new people to play with and get advice on how to improve your skills through social media. Note: if you’ve got little ones, you might find yourself competing for the controller. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
